by Michael MacEachern, NAIA Media Coordinator
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bret Loving’s shorthanded goal in the second half was the difference as No. 2 Graceland University defeated No. 3 Webber International University 1-0 in a semifinal match of the 2006 NAIA Men’s Soccer Men’s Soccer National Championship Monday (Nov. 20) evening at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
The Yellowjackets improved to 17-4-2 and will be making their first-ever appearance in the 7 p.m. title match Tuesday (Nov. 21) against No. 8 Azusa Pacific University, which defeated No. 12 William Jewell College 1-0 in the other semifinal. The Warriors ended their first trip to the tournament at 14-5-0.
Graceland was forced to play a man down after Facundo Rinaldi was sent off the pitch with 52 seconds remaining in the opening half. The Yellowjackets scored on Loving’s free kick from outside of the box. Loving’s kick somehow found a crease through the wall and the ball scampered past Webber International goalkeeper Tony Restino into the left corner of the net.
Yellowjackets’ goalkeeper Issac Unruh preserved with the Graceland victory as he made two point-blank saves in the final minutes.
