Lindsey Wilson Tops Azusa Pacific 4-1 to Claim Seventh National Title

by Alison Smalling, Assistant Director of Sports Information

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. A pair of goals in the first half and another two goals in the second lifted the second-seeded Lindsey Wilson College mens soccer team to a 4-1 victory against No. 5 Azusa Pacific University earning their seventh national title in the championship match of the 47th Annual NAIA Mens Soccer National Championship hosted by Embry-Riddle University.

Lindsey Wilson (23-1), which last won the national crown in 2001, took the 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute on a rebound goal by Tiyiselan Shipalane. Nathaniel Jafta started the attack with a fleet-footed dribble into the 18-yard box. A Lindsey Wilson attacker was brought down in the box, but the referee allowed the play to continue and the deflection off the APU defender fell to Shipalane who beat Azusa keeper James Crawford low.

Just 11 minutes later, Fausey Rodriguez lifted a ball from about 35 yards out into the box. Serghino Sandy rose above the APU defense and headed the ball back across the face of the goal into the side netting to increase the lead to 2-0.

The Blue Raiders continued their offensive pressure with their third goal of the night just five minutes into the second half. Vuyasani Nyandeni took the ball down to the end line and sent a cross into the penalty area and found an umarked Scott Blanford at the top of the box. Blanford smacked a right-footed half volley into the upper left corner to make the score 3-0.

The Cougars got a goal back courtesy of a set piece in the 63rd minute. Brandon Stirm lifted a ball into the box that was headed down by Kolt Callaway to Ian Leibbrandt. Leibbrandt lifted the ball over Lindsey Wilson keeper Glenn Fox for his 16th marker of the year.

Whatever momentum APU may have gained from Leibbrandts goal was quickly extinguished as Shipalane and Jafta combined to assist on Mkokheli Dubes 22nd goal of the 2005 season to seal the win.

Azusa Pacific, which appeared in the schools first ever mens soccer national championship match, ended its season at 20-5.

Members of both teams were also presented with individual awards as APUs Andriy Budnyy was named the tournaments outstanding offensive player and LWCs Brian Ombiji was named the tournament MVP.
