William Jewell Wins Second Consective Shootout, Defeats Rio Grande 3-1

Andy Shields made two saves to preserve another shootout victory for William Jewell.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ; William Jewell College goalkeeper Andy Shields came up huge for the second consecutive day as the No. 12 Cardinals advanced on a 3-1 shootout victory over No. 4 University of Rio Grande in a quarterfinal match of the 2006 NAIA Men;s Soccer National Championship Saturday (Nov. 18) afternoon at Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.

The teams were tied at 2 after 110 minutes of play and resulted in the tournament;s fifth shootout in 13 matches.

William Jewell improved to 18-2-2 and will face the winner of the quarterfinal between No. 17 Northwood (Fla.) University and No. 8 Azusa Pacific University at 6 p.m. Monday (Nov. 20) in a semifinal contest. The Redmen ended their season at 18-2-1.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead after the first round in the shootout when Dusty Green connected on his kick and Rio Grande;s Jason Massie;s blast pinged off the right goalpost. Shields gave the Cardinals command of the shootout when he stopped Callum Morris; shot to the left to give William Jewell a 3-1 lead after the third round. Rio Grande goalie Derek Talcott stopped John Barber;s pick in the fourth round to keep the Redmen alive, but Shields then saved Conar Dawson kick to preserve the win.

Rio Grande forced the extra time when they scored twice in the second half after William Jewell enjoyed a 2-0 lead at the half. The Redmen tied the match at 2 in 61st minute when Frank Brown knocked in a rebound off Dawson;s initial shot that clanked the post. Rio Grande;s first goal was scored at the 50:13 mark by Guy Haywood off a Ryan Baxter assist. Manny Tovar and Austin Williams scored the goals for William Jewell.
