William Jewell Advances on Shootout over Southern Nazarene

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ; No. 12 William Jewell College defeated No. 5 Southern Nazarene University 4-1 in a shootout after the teams battled to a 1-1 draw in a second-round match of the NAIA Men;s Soccer National Championship Friday (Nov. 17) afternoon at Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
The Cardinals improved to 18-2-1 and will face No. 4 University of Rio Grande in a noon quarterfinal match Saturday (Nov. 18). The Crimson Storm ended their season at 15-3-4.
William Jewell netminder Andy Shields was huge in the shootout as he stopped two penalty kicks as the Cardinals took a 3-1 lead after the first three rounds. John Barber sealed the win in the fourth round for William Jewell as he went top shelf past SNU goalkeeper David Eguren into the right-hand corner of the net.
The two teams swapped goal in the first 45 minutes. Dominque Nayaga;s 19th goal of the season off a Daniel Agina assist in the 15th minute gave the Crimson Storm an early advantage. The Cardinals tied the match at 1 at the 25:22 mark as Josh Howard headed the ball after teammate Kevin Nekuda perfectly placed his corner kick to Howard at the far post. It was the first goal of the tournament scored off a corner kick.
