by Michael MacEachern, NAIA Media Coordinator
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ; Guy Heywood;s goal in the 84th minute was the difference as No. 4 seed University of Rio Grande defeated the No. 20 seed Lindsey Wilson College 2-1 in the second round of the 2006 NAIA Men;s Soccer National Championship Thursday (Nov. 16) afternoon at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
The Redman improved to 18-2-0 and will face the winner of Friday;s (Nov. 17) second round match between No. 5 Southern Nazarene University and No. 12 William Jewell College on Saturday (Nov. 18) at noon. The Blue Raiders saw their defense of the 2005 title end and completed their season at 12-10-0.
After Lindsey Wilson missed clearing the ball out of their backfield, Heywood collected the ball at the top of the box and chipped it over Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper Dejan Ondelj;s head. The Blue Raiders had one last chance to send the match into overtime when Ondelj fired a laser in the final minute that Rio Grande keeper Derek Talcott laid out and denied.
Rio Grande grabbed the first goal of the game in the 16th minute, when senior Conar Dawson took a pass from Jason Massie and fired it through traffic past the Lindsey Wilson goalie.
Lindsey Wilson equalized with 29:31 remaining in the game. Nathanial Jafta;s shot glanced off the fingertips of the Rio keeper and Adam Howard found himself with a gaping net in which he hammered home the tying goal.
