Northwood Advances on PKs Against Hastings

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ; After battling through 110 minutes tied at 1, Northwood (Fla.) University will continue play in the 2006 NAIA Men;s Soccer National Championship after defeating Hastings College 4-3 in penalty kicks in a first-round match Wednesday (Nov. 15) evening at Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks improved to 9-10-2 and will face No. 1 seed Auburn University Montgomery in a 7 p.m. second-round match Thursday (Nov. 16). The Broncos ended their campaign at 12-6-3.
Northwood took a 1-0 lead after the first round of the shootout when Northwood netminder Dustin Vrooman made a nice save to his left on a shot attempt by Nick Vanous while Seahawks converted their opportunity on Kawa Ford;s shot. After that the two teams traded goals for goals and misses for misses until with the shootout tied at 3, Jonathan Taylor;s shot found the upper 90 of the right corner of the goal.Northwood, which outshot the Broncos 7-0 in the two 10-minute overtime periods, had three quality opportunities to win the contest. Jere Kolehmainen;s shot hit the crossbar with five minutes left in the first sudden-death period. In the second overtime, Joonas Siikala had two chances ; one hit the far post and the other one was saved by Hastings goalkeeper Chris Ladwig.
Hastings took a 1-0 lead 42 seconds into the contest as Matt Quinlan came out of a scrum in front of the goal and scored his ninth goal of the season. Northwood got the match leveled at 1 in the opening minutes of the second half as Jacob Reuthammer took a through ball from Jonathan Taylor at the 47:25 mark.
