by Michael MacEachern, NAIA Media Coordinator
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ; After battling to a 2-2 double overtime draw, No. 14 Park University advanced in the NAIA Men;s Soccer National Championship as the Pirates defeated No. 19 Goshen College 3-1 on penalty kicks in their first-round match Wednesday (Nov. 15) evening at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
The last match at the national tournament to go to penalty kicks came during the 2004 quarterfinal match between Azusa Pacific University and Lindsey Wilson College. Park improved to 13-7-1 and will face No. 3 seed Webber International University in a 4:30 p.m. second-round match Thursday (Nov. 16). The Maple Leafs, who were making their first appearance in the tournament since 1977, ended their season at 15-5-4.
In the shootout, Park took a 1-0 advantage in the first round as Pirate goalkeeper Matt Heiman stopped Joel Miller;s attempt and Paul McLaughlin found the back of the net. After both teams scored in the second round, Heiman came up big again as he stopped Cody Felton;s attempt in round three. After Mirsad Dzilic;s goal gave Park a 3-1 advantage, the Pirates sealed the win when Adam;s Yoder shot went wide right.
Park jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of the first half. Stefan Stokich worked a give-and-go to perfection with teammate McLaughlin at the 8:20 mark. The Pirates added another goal nearly 10 minutes later on James Katajwa;s 12th goal of the season.
Goshen battled back to tie the match at 2 with two goals in a two minute-span. The Maple Leafs got one goal back at the 29:38 mark on Miller;s sixth goal of the season. Goshen got the equalizer as they took advantage of a Park miscue in the backfield and Kyle Stifney found the back of the net.
After an offensive display in the opening half, the second half was the exact opposite as neither team could find the back of the net. The best opportunity for either team came with 18 seconds remaining in regulation when Miller;s free kick from just outside the box sailed high.
